Marching into Pre - Season

As March really starts to mark the approach of the cricket season, Cricket Groundsmen must intensify their efforts to prepare the cricket square and the entire ground for play.

This crucial period requires essential preparation of the square encompassing:

  • Grass seeding,
  • Soil conditioning
  • Pre-season rolling
  • Squaring off the square
  • Outfield improvement
  • Mowing
  1. Grass Seeding for thin or bare areas:

Objective:

  • Address bare or sparse areas on the cricket square to ensure a consistent and resilient playing surface. Focus particularly on any ends that have not germinated due to compaction/and or wet/poor renovation

Actions:

  • Identify bare patches and oversee them with appropriate grass seed varieties. As temperatures warm up options include the Hurrells Cricket Square renovation mix, Barenbrug Extreme, or Headstart Gold
  • Opt for a high-quality seed mix suitable for cricket pitches, emphasizing wear tolerance and quick establishment.
  • Ensure proper seed-to-soil contact by lightly scarifying the surface before overseeding.
  • Keep the newly seeded areas consistently moist to promote germination and establishment.
  1. Fertilizers for Soil Improvement:

Objective:

  • Enhance the overall condition of the soil to promote healthy grass growth and pitch resilience.

Actions:

  • Conduct a soil analysis to determine nutrient deficiencies and pH levels. Please contact us via here if you would like us to complete a soil sample
  • Select a balanced fertilizer with a focus on potassium for root development and nitrogen for lush, green growth. Examples for this would be Battersbys 4-0-4+4%fe Micro Tonic. This will also help aid the removal of any moss build up over what has been an exceptionally wet winter to this point
  • Apply fertilizers at recommended rates, considering the specific needs of the soil and grass.
  • Time fertilizer applications to coincide with periods of active growth.
  • Soil Conditioners such as Enhance C will help improve the microbial activity in the soil and help reduce worm activity, which can be unsightly and cause issues on the playability of your square, as well as damaging machinery.
  1. Pre-Season Rolling:

Objective:

  • Achieve a smooth, firm, and consistent playing surface that provides an even bounce for the cricket ball.

Actions:

  • Begin pre-season rolling as the ground begins to dry out.
  • Gradually increase roller weight to compact the surface and provide a firm pitch.
  • Roll in different directions to avoid creating a one-sided pitch bias.
  • Monitor the pitch's response to rolling and adjust accordingly to achieve the desired firmness.
  • The right conditions for rolling are a ‘plasticine’ like consistency – there should be enough moisture available to squeeze out of the ground, but not too wet that you are smearing the surface. You will also need some drying weather to help dry the profile out as you increase the weight of your roller/compaction.
  1. Squaring Off the Square:

Objective:

  • Define the playing area by squaring off the square, ensuring clear boundaries for accurate gameplay.

Actions:

  • Use string lines and pegs to mark the boundaries of the square. We recommend mushroom pegs which are easy to be located and will sit in your surface without causing any issues. Regular ‘dotting’ with an aerosol spray will ensure that you don’t lose them.
  • Employ precise measurements to ensure square corners and straight edges.
  • Check the diagonals to confirm the square's symmetry. This can be achieved using the ‘3-4-5’ method.
  1. Outfield Improvement:

Objective:

  • Enhance the quality and playability of the outfield to complement the well-prepared cricket square.

Actions:

  • Address any uneven or patchy areas in the outfield with overseeding. This can be achieved using the pro sport renovation seed mix
  • Utilize topdressing to level the surface and improve soil composition. Please contact us for further information.
  • Consider aeration to alleviate compaction and enhance water infiltration.
  • Monitor and manage thatch buildup to maintain a healthy and resilient outfield.
  • If you have weed build up on your outfield then applying a selective herbicide should be considered

  1. Recommended Heights for Mowing:

Objective:

  • Establish an optimal mowing height to encourage healthy grass growth and achieve the desired playing characteristics.

Actions:

  • Set the mower at a height appropriate for the grass species on the square, typically between 8-15 mm.
  • Gradually lower the mowing height leading up to the season to encourage denser, finer grass growth.
  • Avoid mowing too low, as this can stress the grass and compromise the playing surface.
  • Regularly inspect and sharpen mower blades for a clean cut.
Conclusion:

As the cricket season approaches in March and April, Cricket Groundsmen play a crucial role in ensuring that the playing surfaces are in optimal condition. Through targeted actions such as grass seeding, strategic fertilization, pre-season rolling, squaring off the square, outfield improvement, and careful mowing practices, Groundsmen can create a playing environment that meets the high standards required for competitive cricket.

The synergy of these efforts contributes to a visually appealing, consistent, and safe playing surface, enhancing the overall cricket experience for players and spectators alike. By adhering to best practices and adapting to the unique needs of the ground, Groundsmen contribute significantly to the success of the cricket season.
