Don't forget these...

Boughton County loam with typical clay content above 30% giving a firm true pitch able to last at least four days at a County Cricket level or to give a better surface to a higher standard Club.

Boughton Loam pitches are renowned for being free draining which enables quick easy pitch preparation along with fast grass seed germination.

For construction projects Boughton Loam can be screened at 10mm to facilitate being used as a base loam so reducing costs when the construction is greater than 75mm in depth. To finish of your project or for the construction of pitches of less than 75mm in depth Boughton Loam can be screened at 3mm to give a smooth level finish.

Loam & Top-Dressing FAQ's

Top Dressing is usually used on lawns and bowling greens to improve the soil structure and provide better drainage which overall contributes to
healthy grass. For bowling greens, using top dressing also helps create a level playing surface and protects any recently sown grass seed.

Loam would never be used on a lawn due to its high clay content. In hot weather the loam will bake and become compacted, resulting in poor rooting for grass and bad drainage. However, loam is ideal for use on a cricket pitch as it is hard but grass will still grow in it. Cricket loam is quarried but doesn’t have any soil added.

Top dressing a lawn has many benefits.

  • Topdressing helps keep the lawn’s surface levelled. This is done by filling all of the smaller hollows and undulations with the topdressing mix, thus levelling the lawn surface.
  • Topdressing your lawn regularly helps prevent the buildup of thatch. Topdress can dilute the thatch layer and is also known to naturally break it down.
  • Using sand based topdressing can improve your soil’s drainage and firm up the surface. This works particularly well after aeration as the topdressing can be worked into the soil through the holes left behind.
  • Spreading peat-based topdressing can improve the drought tolerance of your lawn.
  • Some topdressing mixtures contain nutrients so applying them can improve your lawn's fertility.
  • Topdressing helps stimulate grass growth in lawns and betters the soil structure of the already existing root zone.
  • Improves the lawn’s resilience.

Cricket loam is a blend of three minerals, clay, silt and sand.

The balance of the three minerals all play their part in the binding process of loam and are all key in the inter-packing of particles that create a hard surface, with the aim of the ball to not deform the surface on impact.

Cricket loams are also tested in terms of shrinkage rates and soil
strength testing (The Adam and Stewart binding test) meaning loam is quite a complex mix, with lots of differing factors and with this in mind your getting a well thought out bag of loam.

- Consistency, is every bag equal in moisture.

- Size of particles? This is only relevant if changing loams, but is it compatible with the shrinkage rate of my current loam.
